Good Morning Friends and Family,
We have another incredible day here in Washington, Vermont. Today is the first day of Autumn but it hasn’t felt that way all week. Shocking blue skies with light wispy clouds. Bright sun heating up the day into the eighties. A very special way to welcome the coming of fall. The nights will start to get cold and soon our gardens will be draped in ghost figures warding off the first of early morning.
I spend a bit of time sorting through the remained of the harvest. I let the cherry tomatoes go crazy this summer, with many overseeding from last year. I didn’t realize they would do that thinking I was just getting some composting benefit from letting the spoiled fruit give back to the soil. What I have now are tangles of branches some 8 feet long, with tons of fruit. Lots of green ones won’t make it to the kitchen but I will admit it just gets overwhelming to pick them all. My last attack is going to me cutting off branches at a time and picking the ripe ones and composting the rest. We have another week or two here in the upper elevations with winter on our doorstep before we know it.
Between apples and cordwood, the rest of the days are full. JB is still healing from his motorcycle accident and is sporting a smaller cast on his left hand. He can help with the wood but he measures his time so as not to overdo it and pay the price the following day. He has focused on the larger wood for the downstairs stove mostly because he doesn’t need to move it very far thereby minimal walking is involved. I have been moving the smaller wood because it is lighter (and easier for me) but I was the one who had it unloaded on the wrong side of the stacked wood from last year so I am hauling it in our work cart from one side of the yard to the other. Won’t make that mistake next year. To be fair, I had just started a new garden bed in the middle of the yard and I didn’t want the wood truck to get anywhere near the delicate plants. Oh well, extra walking is good for me.
