Morel Hunting Under the Ash Trees – June 5, 2017
All things garden seemed to come a little early this year and the morels are no exception. Friends had reported there was an abundance found in their secret haunts. We were away in Boston for the weekend and lamented not catching them in their prime. Our first chance to hunt was on this past Thursday, a good 5 days after finding our first one last year. But our fortune was realized when we came upon a vast amount of the fleeting mushroom.
Preserving Them for Future Enjoyment
We found so many this year that we couldn’t eat them all before fearing they would go bad. Enjoying them sautéed with a good steak is a spring treat like no other. We did a little research and asked a few seasoned Morel hunters and decided to dry them for future use. It was quite simple. Wash them us, dry them in a low oven and place them is a sealed jar. A few of the stragglers were easily dried in a bowl in the refrigerator. Then a quick rehydrate and almost as good as fresh!
